Promoting safe, shared use of the Boise River Greenbelt

The Boise River Greenbelt

The Boise River Greenbelt is one of the Treasure Valley’s most cherished outdoor resources. The 29-mile path runs from Lucky Peak Recreation Area to Eagle Island State Park, providing both a tree-lined recreational pathway for folks along the river and a commuter route for those traveling on foot or by bicycle to the cities and counties along the way.

As more community members and visitors head to the path, TVP’s leaders want to remind everyone that safety on the path depends on shared responsibility and awareness of what belongs there.

Here’s what you need to know about Greenbelt etiquette and safety expectations on the shared pathway.

Greenbelt Safety

The Greenbelt is traditionally for walkers and bicyclists, but recently, there has been a sharp increase in the use of high-speed, motorbike-style electric vehicles both on the Greenbelt and on city sidewalks and pathways.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Electric dirt bikes and electric motorcycles are NOT allowed on the Greenbelt, in public parks, or on city streets.

ALLOWED:

Low-wattage e-bikes (750 watts motor or less) are permitted. E-bikes must have a classification sticker (1, 2, or 3) showing class, maximum assisted speed, and wattage.

Traditional bicycles, scooters, and similar devices are also welcome on the pathway along the Boise River.

NOT ALLOWED:

High-powered electric dirt bikes and motocross-style vehicles (motor over 750 watts) are not permitted. This includes e-bikes without classification labels.

These vehicles can travel at unsafe speeds for a multi-use path and create safety risks for families, runners, and other path users.

Greenbelt Etiquette

As Treasure Valley residents and visitors head outside to enjoy our scenic pathway, here are a few guidelines to keep the path safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone:

Keep right, pass on left.

Announce when passing.

Pedestrians have the right of way.

Don’t block the full width of the path.

Maintain safe speeds.

Keep dogs on leashes.

Pick up after people and animals.

Respect natural wildlife and nature.

Smoke-free zone.
